Public spaces
A place for reflection at Moncus Park.
The Kergan Family Meditation Garden at Moncus Park was designed by Land Architecture, and EdenScapes built it from the ground up. The work started below ground. We installed an extensive drainage system for South Louisiana's stormwater and commercial-grade irrigation for the wide range of plantings. Then careful grading shaped the sweeping curves and changes in elevation in the design. Curving pathways built with Gravel-Lok keep the natural look of gravel while giving a firm, accessible surface that holds up to heavy public use. A custom cream-colored timber pergola anchors the main gathering area and marks the entrance to the more intimate parts of the garden.
The garden's signature feature is a raised spiral mound. Large basalt columns, each set about two feet into the ground, wind up the rolling lawn toward a center column and sundial. It's a striking pattern from above and an experience to walk through at ground level. Hundreds of Native trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials fill sweeping beds that follow the curves of the paths and add color and texture through every season. A modern, multi-tiered stone fountain set in river rock adds the gentle sound of moving water, and wooden benches along the paths invite visitors to sit and stay a while. Low-voltage lighting carries the garden's quiet character into the evening, giving Moncus Park a place for reflection that's meant to be walked through, not just viewed.
